It's the semifinal round of AHSAA boys basketball area tournaments, and the two local teams who played host won their games and advanced in Monday's finals.
Mortimer Jordan tops Curry: In the 5A Area 11 semifinal, host Mortimer Jordan held off a couple of rally attempts by the Yellow Jackets to win 60-47. Ben Hardiman score 14 points, Tyler Pelkey 12 and Mark Louis 11 for the Blue Devils. Jarrod Owens scored 17 and Santos Martinez added 15, with four 3-pointers, for Curry. Jordan takes on Walker Monday night at 7 in the area championship.
Byrd flies, Corner triumphs: Blake Byrd scored a career-high 33 points, with four 3-pointers and 11-of-14 at the foul line as the Yellow Jackets defeated Haleyville 60-52 in the first round of the Class 4A Area 11 Tournament at Corner. Austin Sanford scored 10 points. Byrd and Kyle Moody sealed the win at the free throw line in the last two minutes, where the pair went 5-for-6 each. The Yellow Jackets will play Dora, who beat Fayette County 66-60, in Monday's finals at 6:30 p.m.
Gardendale falls to Minor: Nathan Sheffield had 15 points, five rebounds and four blocks, but it wasn't enough as the host Tigers outscored the Rockets 19-8 in the final period for a 57-45 victory in the semifinals of the Class 6A Area 11 Tournament. Gardendale finishes the season with a 10-17 record.
Walker cages Hayden: At the Class 5A Area 11 Tournament at Mortimer Jordan, the Vikings started to take control in the second quarter with key steals and 3-pointers, while the Wildcats simply couldn't get any momentum as Walker prevailed 63-43. Seth Aderhold and Corey Speakman scored 12 points each to lead Hayden, while Deshaun Kendrick had 17 and Michael Bridges 11 for Walker.
Fultondale ousted by Tornadoes: In the Class 2A Area 10 Tournament at Vincent, Holy Family Cristo Rey jumped out to a 20-point lead in the first quarter and rolled from there to a 67-44 win. Travez Hicks and Deundrea Marshall scored 12 points wach for the Wildcats.
