The Gardendale softball team (22-3-1) has won 13 of its last 14 games with the one loss coming in the Alex Wilcox Memorial Tournament championship game on Saturday night. The No. 4-ranked Rockets won five games over the weekend, but lost to G.W. Long by a score of 6-2 in the tournament finals.
During pool play on Friday, Gardendale beat Lamar County 12-0, Zion Chapel 11-0 and Thomasville 5-1. On Saturday bracket play came and went with a 3-1 win over Saraland followed by a 3-1 win over Holtville in the semifinals.
Outfielder Abigail Waters led the Rockets with six hits and an RBI during three bracket games. Shortstop Carlee McCondichie finished with three hits and an RBI to go with two hits and an RBI from Sarah Beth Brake.
Kaitlyn Clark (seven innings pitched, eight strikeouts), Haley Horton (six innings pitched, six strikeouts) and Preslie Ross (four innings pitched, four strikeouts) handled the pitching duties throughout Gardendale's second-place tournament run.
On Monday, the Rockets broke into the MaxPreps (national) Top 25 high school softball rankings at No. 21. Gardendale is the only Alabama school listed after Class 7A Spain Park dropped out this week.
The Corner baseball team (13-7, 5-1) lost two of three against Oak Grove on Friday and Saturday. The Tigers won 10-0 on Friday and 5-1 on Saturday. Corner took the second part of a Friday doubleheader 7-6.
The Yellow Jackets pushed four runs across in the top of the seventh to earn the road win. Cole Fuller finished with two walks and a pair of walks for the visitors.
Dan Knowlton threw 20 first-pitch strikes in six innings on the hill.
The Gardendale baseball team (11-5, 2-0) failed to scratch a run across on Friday at home. Hueytown made the trip over and returned home with an 8-0 victory.
Hueytown senior Andrew Nolan pitched the shutout, striking out five batters on his way to the team’s 11th win.
Gardendale began spring break week with a 7-5 road win over rival Mortimer Jordan Monday. Rocket senior Hayes Haygood scattered three hits on the home team, resulting in two RBIs. He also struck out five batters in four 1/3 innings pitched. Carson Cook provided a pair of RBIs for Gardendale while Dalton Myers drove in two runs for Mortimer Jordan.
The Mortimer Jordan baseball team (14-9, 2-2) swept through a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday against Pleasant Grove (twice), Montevallo and Locust Fork.
The Blue Devils outpaced Pleasant Grove by a combined score of 18-2 on Friday. Jordan bounced back on Saturday with a 6-3 win over Montevallo followed by a 10-0 victory over Locust Fork.
According to stats provided by the Mortimer Jordan staff, Garek Hall leads the team with 25 hits, including five doubles and a triple. Tripp Horton has 20 RBIs and a .329 batting average while center fielder Garrison McCleney leads the Blue Devils with two home runs. McCleney is responsible for 17 runs scored and 15 RBIs.
Preston Jones has a team-high 32.1 innings pitched and a 1.73 ERA. Grayson Nabors has thrown 28.1 innings and 13 strikeouts for Mortimer Jordan.
