Junior guard Kameron Woods spent this season shooting the Pinson Valley boys basketball team to its first-ever state championship.
The Indians, under new leadership provided by head coach Darrell Barber, had never won a regional tournament or gone to a Final Four or come close to a state championship trophy before Woods tucked in a PVHS jersey. The 6-foot Midfield transfer made the move to Pinson with Barber in time for this season, and together the pair helped commandeer a historic playoff run.
That’s why Woods is the 2018-19 North Jefferson News Basketball Player of the Year. He averaged 26 points per game for the Class 6A state champions and was named one of three 6A finalists for the Mr. Basketball award, which annually represents the top player in the state, regardless of classification.
Although he would yield to Mountain Brook’s Trendon Watford in the race for Mr. Basketball, Woods was recently recognized as the 2018-19 Class 6A Player of the Year following his Class 3A Player of the Year victory last season as a sophomore at Midfield.
Woods, a first-team Alabama Sports Writers Association All-State selection, earned MVP honors for his 25-point performance in a 58-44 win over Carver-Montgomery in the state championship game on March 2. The junior scored 10 of those points during a dominant fourth quarter in Birmingham.
That was but a fraction of his postseason point total. Woods also scored 13 against Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa in the state semifinals after sinking a total of 57 points in two Northeast Regional games at Jacksonville State University.
If Woods and North Jefferson News Basketball Coach of the Year Darrell Barber return to The Valley next season, who’s to say they aren’t ready to repeat?
