One man has been arrested, and an accomplice remains at large after a shooting and robbery not far from Jefferson State Community College last week.
Larry Dale Tolbert, 30, of Remlap was arrested Monday at a house near Port Birmingham on charges of attempted murder and first degree robbery.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the charges stem from an incident early on Nov. 23, when a 33-year-old Hispanic male reported that he had been robbed and shot on a dead-end street.
Investigators responded to to a call about a suspicious person, who turned out to be the victim, who was located near the 4900 block of Pinson Valley Parkway. He had been shot twice in the upper body. The victim told investigators that he had gone out driving with a white female whom he had recently met, and that she suggested they go back to her house. They soon encountered two white males that the victim did not know.
After riding around in and near Pinson in a black Volkswagen Jetta, the group pulled to the end of a dead end street and stopped. The two men then ordered the victim out of the car and pulled guns out on him. The men told the victim to give them his wallet, forced him to lie down and then shot him in the back twice.
The victim stayed down until the men left, then went to a nearby residence to ask for help. He couldn’t tell investigators his whereabouts or where he had gone elsewhere, as he was unfamiliar with the area.
The investigation led to warrants sworn last Wednesday for Tolbert and for Tommy Eugene Reed, 32, of Ashville. Then on Monday, acting on tips from a Crime Stoppers call, Tolbert was found hiding out in a closet in the 900 block of Alliance Road. He was apprehended without incident.
Reed remains at large; any information on his whereabouts should be called in to the sheriff’s office at 325-1450, or Crime Stoppers at 254-7777.
Bond has been set for Tolbert and Reed at $200,000.
The victim was taken to a local hospital, and is expected to survive.
[Edited at 4:20 p.m. to correct a typo in the date of the incident, and to clarify that the shooting took place south of the city of Pinson proper, adjacent to the Jeff State campus.]
