Good morning, and welcome to Frigid Friday...
Weather: Not exactly a warm-up. At least today we will break the freezing mark, but not by much. Sunny, and a bit breezy in the morning with a high around 40. Cold tonight with lows in the upper teens. Sunny again on Saturday, with a high near 40 and lows in the upper 20s. Sunday will be warmer with a slight chance of rain with highs in the upper 40s.
Thawing out. We didn't set a record for cold temperatures Wednesday night, but we came close. The official low in Birmingham was eight degrees, one degree higher than the record for the date. But the brutal temps resulted in plenty of busted pipes around the region (including one in this reporter's office), but few utility outages.
Sports: Three Tide players head for the pros. Alabama is losing three key players a year early, as receiver Amari Cooper, running back T.J. Yeldon and safety Landon Collins are declaring themselves eligible for the NFL Draft. Cooper and Collins are expected to go in the top 10 picks, and Yeldon will be among the top running backs to be taken... Softball: Former Mortimer Jordan star and current Crimson Tide outfielder Haylie McCleney has been selected again for the U.S. National Team. She'll play for the USA in the World Cup X tournament in California, as well as the Pan American Games in Canada, both to be played in July... Boys basketball: Fultondale is back to its winning ways, as the Wildcats scored a 53-39 win over visiting Indian Springs. Asa Williams paced the Cats (10-1) with 17 points. Fultondale faces a stern test tonight, as Midfield – who's been in the last three state championship finals – comes to play.
