Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies were still looking for a man they believe shot an off-duty Birmingham Police officer at his home in Pinson on Monday night.

UAB Hospital identified the officer as Silburn Smith, 37. Spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards of the Birmingham Police Department confirmed that the victim is a 15-year veteran of the force, and was in stable condition as of Tuesday morning with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Smith was apparently shot by a man whose wife was in Smith’s house, which is located in the 5000 block of Gold Leaf Lane. It's about a mile southwest of the Palmerdale Homesteads Community Center.

Investigators say the suspect went to the house at about 8 p.m., shortly after his wife entered the house, then shot the officer three times when he answered the door. The suspect then fled in a car. He remained at large Tuesday morning; authorities said Monday that they know his identity.

Warrants will be issued as soon as formal charges are filed.
