Identity theft ring busted. A real-time fraud monitoring system at Regions Bank and quick work by Gardendale Police resulted in three men being arrested late last week in an attempt to steal credit-card information. The men, all immigrants from African countries, were charged with trying to buy gift cards at Walmart using credit cards they had made themselves, using data stolen from legitimate cards. The men are all jailed on $1 million bond. It's not known yet if any of the stolen data came from victims in the local area.
Sports: Wild weekend. Let's start with auto racing, where Ryan Hunter-Reay won the 98th running of the Indianapolis 500 yesterday by the slimmest of margins. He edged Helio Castroneves – who was going for a record-tying fourth 500 victory – by just 0.06 seconds, the second smallest lead ever at the finish. The two had exchanged the lead several times in the last few laps, after a restart from a red flag on lap 192... NASCAR: Jimmie Johnson went from the pole position to victory lane as he won the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte, his first win of the year. Kurt Busch blew an engine on lap 271 and placed 41st, as he attempted the Indy-Charlotte double; he finished sixth at the Brickyard... NHL: Martin St. Louis scored six minutes into overtime to give the New York Rangers a 3-2 win over Montreal in the Eastern Conference finals series. The Rangers lead the Canadiens three games to one. Tonight, Los Angeles and Chicago face off in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals, with the Kings up two games to one... NBA: Serge Ibaka, who supposedly was injured and out of the playoffs, came back after two games off to lead Oklahoma City to a 106-97 victory over San Antonio in the Western Conference finals. The Spurs are up two games to one in the series... MLB: Josh Beckett threw his first career no-hitter, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-0 win over Philadelphia. It's the first no-no of the Major League season.
