A happy Friday to you…

Weather: Nice again. Yet another sunny and warm day, a little warmer than yesterday, Highs in the middle 80s, nighttime lows in the upper 50s. There’s a slight chance of a shower Saturday, then another cold front rolls through on Sunday to knock temps down to the 70s.

Part job interview, part homecoming. It was an interview for the Jefferson County Schools superintendent’s job yesterday, to be sure. But the board members were probably very familiar with Dr. Julie Hannah, who had been an interim deputy superintendent for the system until about six months ago. Hannah, a native of Gardendale, was the fourth of five candidates interviewed to be the replacement for the retiring Dr. Phil Hammonds. Hannah left JeffCo to become the director of student learning for the Alabama Department of Education; she still commutes daily from her Gardendale home. We’ll have more about Hannah later today at njeffersonnews.com.

Dogs kill owner’s neighbor. Two large dogs, described by police as similar to a Rottweiler, killed an elderly man in Leeds Thursday after they got loose from their yard. Donald Thomas, 82, lived next to a man who had 26 other dogs as well. Police killed the two dogs who attacked Thomas, and confiscated the others. No charges have been filed yet.

Sports: Are you ready for some football? It’s Friday night, and you know what that means. The high school lineup is headed up by the NJN Big Game, with fifth-ranked Vestavia Hills visiting Gardendale. In other games, Fultondale hits the road after falling out of the number-one spot in Class 2A and will take on another tough opponent at Walter Wellborn, Mortimer Jordan hosts Springville, Pinson Valley heads to Hayden, Calera is at Corner and Peoples Baptist of Douglasville, Ga. makes the trip to play Tabernacle Christian… Golf: The PGA Tour has reached its year-end FedEx Championship at East Lake in Atlanta, and guess who’s at the top of the leaderboard? It’s that Tiger Woods guy again, who shot a 66 and is tied with Justin Rose after the first round… NFL: Eli Manning had a great night and Cam Newton didn’t, which has a lot to do with why the New Giants blew away the Carolina Panthers 36-7 on Thursday night. Andre Brown ran for 113 yards and a touchdown.
