Sports rehab facility now open


A sports rehabilitation facility opened in Gardendale recently. According to a press release, Encore Rehabilitation of Gardendale opened Aug. 23 at 919 Sharit Avenue, Suite 101. The release said the Decatur-based practice specializes in orthopedic rehabilitation and sports medicine and is Alabama and Mississippi’s largest private owned rehabilitation company. “Encore provides athletic training services for over 80 high schools including the Fultondale Wildcats, the Mortimer Jordan Blue Devils and the Hoover Bucs,” the release said.

Riley announces AP grant


Gov. Bob Riley announced this week that Alabama has received a multi-million dollar grant from the National Math and Science Initiative to strengthen Advanced Placement (AP) programs in the state's public schools, according to a press release. This award of up to $13.2 million over six years is the largest private grant on record for K-12 public education in the state. Alabama is one of only seven states chosen for this highly competitive grant. “Expanding Advanced Placement programs is critical to providing a world-class education for our children and making sure they are prepared to succeed in today’s global economy,” Riley said.

Tourism department awarded


Alabama’s tourism department has been named the best in the South for the third time in four years, according to a state press release. The Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel received the award from the Southeast Tourism Society. The department was nominated for its Year of Alabama Arts campaign. The agency won for campaigns focusing on gardens in 2004 and food in 2005. The food campaign, which featured a brochure of “100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama Before You Die,” was selected as the best promotion in the country by the National Council of State Tourism Directors.
