Gardendale’s library, which is closed for the next two weeks for renovations, will get new work stations, tables, shelving and other items. The Gardendale City Council on Monday approved a bid of almost $53,000 for library furniture from Terrell Enterprises Inc.

In other business, the council:

• authorized an agreement with KPS Group to update the city’s rezoning ordinance

• declared trucks, tractors and other public works equipment as surplus equipment in order to sell it

• hired Austin Brown as a part-time civic center employee and Donna Holcomb as a part-time inspections office employee

• authorized a new street light on Ridge Road

• heard the first readings of ordinances to rezone 746 Main Street from multi-family residential district to an institutional district for use as a fraternal lodge and to rezone 1416 Main Street from single-family residential district to neighborhood shopping district — commercial to use an existing structure as an office

• voted to cut the grass and assess the charges back to the owners at eight properties

• rescheduled the regular Sept. 5 council meeting to Sept. 6, 6 p.m., due to the Labor Day holiday
