The city of Fultondale is continuing to move forward on its large-scale commercial development project.

On Tuesday, the council agreed to allow Mayor Jim Lowery to enter into a loan agreement with the city’s Commercial Development Authority (CDA) in the amount of $300,000.

The city is loaning the funds to the CDA for the possible purchase of land for businesses to locate to the city, according to Fultondale officials. The CDA will be required to pay back the funds.

Also on Monday, the council discussed an ordinance that will strengthen laws regarding door-to-door sales people.

If it passes, the ordinance will require such individuals to purchase business licenses and pay taxes just like other businesses. The sales people will be issued a document stating that they have paid the fee.

“It’s about as strong a door-to-door sales law as you can get,” said Fultondale city attorney Charlie Waldrep.

Lowery said the city is not having major problems with solicitors going door-to-door, but said the city wants to crack down on the practice.

In other business, the council:

• voted to extend Hawkins Lane 400 feet for possible commercial development and for better access to the city’s historic coke ovens. A resolution allows Lowery to receive and accept a bid for the work

• changed the city’s next regular council meeting to June 11, 11:30 a.m., at Fultondale City Hall.
