Carol Fortenbury is a receptionist on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Gardendale Senior Center. She has been a member of the center since February.
How did you end up at the senior center?
I’m a retired licensed insurance agent. I just come in to volunteer; I greet people and hug them when they come in; I get a lot of hugs! I just love it. I’ve always loved Gardendale because my father lived here. The center is the best thing to happen to this city. By the way, you’d be surprised how many members here are single.
Tell us about your family.
I’ve been married for 49 years to my husband, Don; we were married in 1961. Our son, Mark, and our daughter, Tina Pamphilis, both own their own businesses. Tina is a graphic artist, and she’s well-known in Gardendale. Mark lives in Morris, and one of my grandsons goes to Mortimer Jordan High School. I have five grandchildren, and one great-grandbaby.
Do you go to church?
We all go to Gardendale First Baptist Church. When they were kids, you know, we had to make them go to church. Now, it’s nice to look out over the congregation and see them all grown up with their own families.
