Morris police officers responding to a possible burglary Wednesday night quickly turned the incident into a homicide investigation. 

Just after 8 p.m. on Wednesday, the Morris Police Department responded to the report of a burglary at the 600 block of Banks Street.

A woman reported that she arrived home from the grocery store to find a table knocked over and the house in disarray. 

Morris officers checked the residence and discovered the body of her husband, Michael Earl Reese, 40, in a rear kitchen area. He was dead from a gunshot wound, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. 

The Morris Police Department contacted the sheriff’s office and requested assistance in investigating the possible homicide. 

There were no signs of forced entry into the house and nothing was reported missing. No weapons have been recovered, according to the sheriff’s office.
