The Jefferson County Board of Education held a recognition ceremony for all Jefferson County fifth grade scholars on Nov. 1 at Gardendale First Baptist Church. There are more than 6,000 fifth grade students in Jefferson County and only 209 were awarded as super scholars, which puts these students in the top 3 percent in their class. Bryan Elementary had 29 students who received the scholar award: Kathryn Armstrong, Laurin Barnett, Braxton Barnwell, Bellamy Bennett, Mary Claire Chumley, Luke Criss, Noah Cross, Claudia Dunavant, Brier Denham, Seth Holland, Abby Jasper, Angel Johnson, Andrew King, Jonathan Love, Laiken Mann, Kristopher Morrison, Hannah O'Brien, Nicholas Osburn, Eden Pritchett, Brittany Purvis, Melanie Rogers, Marcus Sharit, Makenzie Singletary, Derek Smith, Clay Walker, Allison Watts, Alyssa Whitaker, Sam Wilson and Bradis Worthington. Congratulations to these exceptional students. You make us proud.
• The 20th annual Jefferson County Reading Program will be held Nov. 1-30. During the month of November, the child that reads the most books will receive special recognition. There will also be a number of special activities during November: Nov. 12-16, National Children’s Book Week; and Nov. 13, Parents Reading Day — volunteer to read at your child’s school.
• Bryan Elementary PTA will be selling pecans for the holidays. If you don’t have an order form, you can contact the school for more ordering info. One pound bags are $7.50 or two for $14. Black walnuts and cashews will also be available to order.
