Pinewood Derby

Local Cub Scouts participated in the annual Pinewood Derby racing event recently in Kimberly.

Friday night the Webelos den of Cub Scout Pack 283, sponsored by Liberty Baptist Church in Kimberly, hosted its annual Pinewood Derby racing event.

The very first Pinewood Derby Race was in 1953.

A scout leader named Don Murphy said, “I wanted to devise a wholesome, constructive activity that would foster a closer father-son relationship and promote craftsmanship and good sportsmanship through competition.”

And pinewood derby racing was born!

The Pinewood Derby has grown into a big deal for Cub Scouts around the world.

The derby setup for the Webelos of 283 was as special as they come. Before race night scouts designed, painted and readied their cars with the help of an adult partner.

The race venue was decorated with a racing theme including HotDog Racers, a Filling Station to stay hydrated and a build your own chocolate race car out of swiss rolls for dessert.

Scouts took home trophies and medals and had a lockin at the church following the event.
