Arab High School’s nickname, the Arabian Knights, is a play on the collection of ancient stories known as Arabian Nights.
And so it is that the Knights’ wrestling squad dispensed with their opposition like Ali Baba dispensed with the Forty Thieves, sweeping to the title of the Hayden Duals tournament Wednesday and Thursday.
Arab, which has lost only two dual matches out of 22 this season (by a combined eight points), placed eight wrestlers on the all-tournament team for going undefeated or losing only once.
After a 5-0 trip through pool play, Arab beat Hayden 41-26 in the semifinals, then defeated Pinson Valley 42-25 in the finals.
For the host Wildcats, it was a fourth-place finish after going through pool play with just one loss. They fell to Fort Payne 45-30 in the third-place match.
“Arab got us in the upper weights,” Hayden coach Paul Moore said. “We’re decent all the way up to 171 [pounds], but above that we’re a bit ‘sketchical.’ ”
Pinson had edged Fort Payne 45-40 in the semifinal match.
Fultondale, the only other local team in the tournament, finished in seventh place.

Leadership: Do you have what it takes?
