COMMENTARY — Gardendale



Sunrise Service

April 4, 6 a.m. The annual Easter Sunrise service will be held at Oakwood Memorial Gardens on April 4 at 6:30 a.m. The service will be held at the front of the three crosses facing Moncrief Rd. The North Jefferson Ministry Association is sponsoring the event. There will be music, prayer and a short message to compliment the special day for Christianity. All communities are invited to attend. Should the weather be inclimate our backup plan is to hold the service in the Mausoleum at Oakwood Gardens.



Service Time Change

April 4, 10:30 a.m. North Gardendale Baptist Church invites you to join them for an Easter celebration on April 4 at 10:30 a.m. This date will also mark the beginning of their new service time at 10:30 a.m.



Special Service

April 11, 10:30 a.m. North Gardendale Baptist Church will have a special service on April 11 at 10:30 a.m. with Siran Stacy, to help kick off a new sermon series as they discover the path to a “no regrets” life. For more info call 631-8079.



Registration

April 15, 3:30-6 p.m. Snow Rogers Elementary School will be registering children who will enter Kindergarten and new first-graders for the 2010-2011 school year. It will be necessary for your child to be with you. A simple assessment test will be given to your child while you complete your registration packet. The following documents must be presented for enrollment: (1) legal birth certificate, (2) Social Security card, (3) a blue certificate of immunization (IMM-50), which should include two measles immunizations and one immunization for chicken pox, (4) two proofs of residence (utility bills with name and address on them or a rental or mortgage agreement or property tax assessment card), (5) copy of parent's driver license, and (6) custody papers where applicable. Registration will be permitted at this time without the immunization certificate; however, the proper certificate must be presented before school begins on Aug. 11. A child's fifth birthday must be on or before Sept. 1, 2010, to enroll in Kindergarten for the 2010-2011 school year. For enrollment in first grade, a student's sixth birthday must be on or before Sept. 1, 2010. Parents may call the school at 379-5400 for more information.



Alzheimer’s Group

Covenant Place of Gardendale hosts an Alzheimer’s / Memory Loss Support Group the second Thursday of every month at 6 p.m. Covenant Place is at 1409 Thompson Circle. For more information, call Betty Roberts at 934-2178 or Tiffany Daniel at 608-2230.



Recovery Meetings

Celebrate Recovery meetings at Gardendale-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Call Paul Wiegert at 631-7631.



TOPS

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) #284 meets every Thursday, 8 a.m., in the Camellia Room at the Gardendale Civic Center.



TOPS

Free Tot Shots

The Jefferson County Department of Health will host free tot shot clinics the fourth Thursday of each month at Gardendale First Baptist Church in the Family Life Center, 3-5 p.m.

Gardendale City Council meets the first and third Monday of each month, 6 p.m., at Gardendale City Hall. Meetings are open to the public. Call 631-8789.



Scholarship Donations

The Gardendale High School PTA is collecting donations for the Heather Vaughn Memorial Scholarship Fund, which provides a scholarship every year to a high school senior. To make a donation, call PTA president Susan Rice at 281-8348.



Mt. Olive



Book Signing

April 3, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bobbie Burgett will host a book-signing for her latest release, “From Heartaches to Happiness” at Mt. Olive First Baptist Church, 3200 Mt. Olive Road. Books will be available at the signing. Question-and-answer session with the author. Refreshments served.



Registration

April 8, 8:30-11:30 a.m. Mt. Olive Elementary School Kindergarten registration will take place in the school office. The following items will be required: Student’s certified birth certificate (not the hospital copy), proof of immunization (blue card), Social Security card, two forms of residence verification (utility bill, lease, rent receipt, etc.) and driver’s license. Teachers will conduct a short assessment of each child to determine class placement.



Free Child Care

There will be free child care in the Mt. Olive area for 3 and 4 year olds. The head start program is now enrolling for the summer. Regular full-day childcare is offered. Call 608-1661.



Fultondale



Easter Egg Hunt

April 3, 10 a.m. American Legion Post 255 in Fultondale will host its annual Easter egg hunt at Black Creek Park. The hunt is free and will include more than 700 eggs. There will be more than $400 in prize money given away.

Fultondale City Council meets the second and fourth Mondays at 11:30 a.m. at Fultondale City Hall. Meetings are open to the public. Call 841-4481.



Mother’s Day Out

Walker's Chapel Baptist Church has Mother's Day Out every Tuesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call Amy Ritch at 841-8426.



Kimberly



Registration

April 15 Bryan Elementary School will have Kindergarten registration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3:30-6 p.m. Bring blue immunization card, two proofs of residence, original birth certificate, Social Security card, driver’s license, and guardianship documents if applicable. Bring student for short pre-test.



Cub Scouts

Cub Scout Pack 283 invites boys to join. The meetings are every Monday, 7 p.m., at Liberty Baptist Church. For more information, call den leader Robert Brewer at 647-4377.

Warrior



Seasoned Performers

April 12, 10 a.m. The Warrior Public Library will host The Seasoned Performers at the Warrior Senior Center as part of the library’s Big Read program. The Seasoned Performers will perform parts of Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” then will share their favorite “Conversations from Tom Sawyer.” The event is free to attend. Quilt Ministry

April 24, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Church at Morris Women’s Quilt Ministry will host a Quilt and Needlework Show. The show will include heirloom quilts, hand and machine quilted and miscellaneous needlework. The show is free to the public and refreshments will be served.  The Church at Morris is located at 8350 3rd Ave. N.; the intersection of Morris-Majestic Road and 3rd Ave. N. Mother’s Day Out

Enon Baptist Church’s Mothers Day Out program will offer childcare for children 6 weeks to 4 years old on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program follows the Jefferson County School System calendar, so is closed during all of the breaks. Call 647-9614.

Greenway Festival

April 24 The annual Brookside Greenway Festival will include arts and crafts as well as yard sale spaces. Booth rent is $10 for a 10x10 space. Electricity can be provided. The only requirement is no junk. Vendors must clean their spaces after the event. Dumpsters will be provided. Applications available and fees payable at Brookside Town Hall.     April 16-17 The Federated Garden Clubs of North End Council is hosting its 58th annual flower show at the Gardendale Civic Center. The show is open to the public on April 16, 2-7 p.m., and April 17, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call Phoebe Limbaugh at 631-6137.



    Indoor Yard Sale

    April 17, 18 North Gardendale Baptist Church is holding an indoor yard sale on April 17 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and April 18 from 7 a.m. to noon. If you would like to donate items contact Scott Crews at 368-8071 or the church office at 631-8079. Proceeds benefit the VBS Belize Mission Trip.

    Easter Egg Hunt

    April 11 Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will hold an Easter egg hunt on April 11 at 4 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend this event.



    Last Game at Field

    April 11 Please come out and support the Gardendale High School Rockets Baseball team on April 11. This will be the last regular season home game on the current high school field. There will be three games with the JV starting at 11 a.m. and the varsity playing the last game at 4:30 p.m.



    Revival

    April 12 Glenn’s Chapel Baptist Church will have a revival on April 12 at 6 p.m. and Monday and Tuesday at 7 p.m. Zac Reno is a 24 year-old evangelist and one of the finest of our day.     Night Time Easter Egg Hunt

    April 4 The second annual night time Easter egg hunt will take place on April 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Moncrief Park behind the tennis courts. This event is co-sponsored by The Church Revived and the city of Gardendale. There will be food, games and prizes. Bring your flashlight. Everything is free.



    Walk For Life
