The votes from area wrestling coaches have been counted and today The North Jefferson News announces the 2008 All-North Jefferson Wrestler of the Year, in addition to the All-North Jefferson team.
Fultondale senior Alec Williams, who posted a 61-0 record this season and captured his third state title in three seasons won the top honor as he was named Wrestler of the Year. He took his place on the All-North Jefferson team at 152 pounds. Williams won the final 102 matches of his high school career, as he won the final 41 matches in 2007, when he won the 1A-4A, 145-pound title. In 2006, during his sophomore season, he won the 1A-4A, 140-pound state title.
The other unbeaten member of the All-North Jefferson team, Mortimer Jordan eighth grader Brandon Brindley (52-0) was the only other wrestler to receive votes for Wrestler of the Year. Brindley was the 103 pound member of the All-North Jefferson team.
Brindley’s coach Terry Tingle, who led the Blue Devil’s to a sixth place finish at the 5A state meet, as well as helping three Jordan wrestlers reach the finals, was named The North Jefferson News Coach of the Year.
Also on the team are Hayden’s Ryan Pridmore, who posted a 41-5 record and was 5A state runner-up at 112 pounds. Fultondale’s Cody Evans, who posted a 42-17 record and reached the 1A-4A state tournament at 119 pounds. Hayden’s Joseph Ash, who posted a 35-15 record and reached the 5A state tournament at 125 pounds. Gardendale’s Daniel Swann, who posted a 36-8 record and was the 5A state runner-up at 130 pounds. Fultondale’s Brett Pennington, who posted a 55-5 mark and won the 1A-4A, 135-pound state championship. Hayden’s Justin Russell, who posted a 23-12 record and reached the 5A state tournament at 140 pounds. Hayden’s Josh McCoy, who posted a 34-7 record and finished fourth at the 5A state tournament at 145 pounds. Mortimer Jordan’s James Stewart, who posted a 51-4 record and finished as the 5A state runner-up at 160 pounds. Fultondale’s Sam Robles, who posted a 49-18 record and finished fourth in the 1A-4A state tournament at 171 pounds. Mortimer Jordan’s Rob Glenn, who posted a 49-10 record and won the 5A, 189-pound state championship. Fultondale’s Cody Hatcher, who posted a 16-6 record and reached the 1A-4A state tournament at 215 pounds. Gardendale’s Joe Jones, who posted an 18-4 record and won the 5A, heavyweight state championship.
The team consists of five state champions, three runners-up and two others who won medals at the state tournament. Besides the two unbeaten records, the All-North Jefferson team posted a combined record this season of 568 wins and only 97 losses.
