Hayden senior T.J. Rock began his senior season with the same power he displayed last year when he was an Alabama Sports Writers Association All-State selection.
On Monday, Rock went 6-for-6 in the Wildcats 20-9 win over Guntersville, including blasting two home runs and adding a double to total five RBIs.
Matt Suddeth went 4-for-6 with a homer, a double and three RBIs.
Hayden pounded out 24 hits in the contest.
Clay Jerrigan was the winning pitcher for the Wildcats.
Suddeth took to the hill in the nightcap Monday and picked up the win with a dominating performance.
He struck out 12 and allowed only one hit and no earned runs.
The Wildcats bats stayed hot as they collected 11 hits.
Rock went 2-for-3 and collected a walk, Owen Hargett, Cody Butler, Suddeth and Reese Butts added base hits for the Wildcats.
The Yellow Jackets debut under new coach Shane Chappell was a successful one as Corner’s hitters lead the way.
Zac Reeves went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Paul Vining went 2-for-3 with an RBI and four runs scored. Luke Allums went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Jared Humphrey went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored.
Brett Gurley picked up with win with five innings of five-hit ball. He struck out six. Reeves threw one inning of no-hit ball and struck out two.
Reeves was the winning pitcher as he threw 2 2/3 innings of relief. He allowed only one hit and struck out four. Derrick Moore threw 2 2/3 as well, allowing no hits and struck out five.
At the plate, Caleb Hoyle went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Humphrey went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Reeves helped his own cause as he went 2-for-3 with a double.
Pinson Valley 9,
The Rockets lost their season opener. David Roberts took the loss. He threw 4 2/3 innings of five-hit ball and struck out four. He allowed only one earned run, but the Rockets committed seven errors.
At the plate, Andrew Campbell went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Travis Key went 1-for-2 with a walk and scored one run. Rob Mitchell and Trey Williamon both went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Pleasant Grove 6
For the Rockets (1-1) Key went 3-for-3, Campbell went 1-for-3, with a sacrifice and two runs scored, Josh Headley went 2-for-3 with a double and a run and Hunter Graveman went 1-for-2 and reached base twice on HBPs. Conner McCain picked up the win with four innings of one-hit ball.
