Mortimer Jordan shortstop Danae Hays hit 22 home runs on Saturday.

Twenty-one of them were just for show during a home run derby between games. But the 22nd counted, as it scored the only two runs of the game in the top-ranked Devils 2-1 win over Clay-Chalkville in a tri-series with Prattville.

Pitcher Heather Parker struck out five and allowed four hits. Her only trouble came in the third inning with the bases loaded for the Cougars on three singles. But Hays got them out of trouble with a spectacular off-balance throw to get Madi Gipson out, and Clay never threatened again.

The play capped off a stellar days for Hays, in which she also had an unassisted double play while playing at second base in Jordan’s 8-1 win over Prattville in their first game of the day. She hit two doubles in that game and drove in three runs.

Parker was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Blair Johnson got the complete-game win for the Devils, striking out 10 and giving up five hits. Two of those were to opposing pitcher Brooke Smitherman, who hit a double plus a solo homer for Prattville’s only run.

Jordan hosts Hayden on Thursday.
