Seniors getting informed, dancing at center

By Peggy Hoback Clark

Special to The North Jefferson News

July has brought many new members to the center.

We are so very happy to see folks come in to enjoy our various programs and activities.

We appreciated Rep. Allen Tread-away taking the time to speak to our group about the current problems with Jefferson County. Many questions were answered.

We are also looking forward to Thursday, when Attorney General Troy King will bring a conference to the civic center on fraud and scams. It is too late to register for the conference and lunch, but we can fit a few more people into the room to participate in the conference.

Last Thursday, Belinda Dove with LifeCare Hospice brought giggles and fun with a penny auction. It was a riot. There were a lot of really nice items up for auction. The pennies paid went into the fund for meals. Belinda is a very compassionate, sweet and funny lady. We love her to death.

The AARP driver’s education class has been postponed to Aug. 27-28. There is a $10 fee for the workbook. If you were not able to come on the previous date, here is your chance to take advantage of the class. Just call 631-7240 to reserve your spot as soon as possible.

On July 31, Bobby Harris with the School for the Deaf and Blind will be conducting a hearing screening at our center, beginning at 10 a.m. If you would like to register, please call 631-7240. Did you know that some antibiotics and medications affect your hearing? A strong antibiotic can damage it permanently.

Mackie Horowitz, director of community relations for Positive Maturity, brought Gardendale Fire Marshal Rick Smith to present “Remembering When,” on how to prevent fires.

Just a reminder — check the battery in your smoke alarm.

The Country Pickers want to invite all seniors in the area who are 55 and older to attend the Tuesday evening dance from 6 to 9. We take a break at 7 for potluck finger foods. The band consists of Jerry Bosworth, Jerry Bradley, Paul Simpson, Buddy Bailey and Skip Drake. They need the break because they give it all they have. They receive at least two standing ovations every Tuesday. Come and experience a good time.

    Dear Savvy Senior
What can you tell me the about the constant ear ringing syndrome known as tinnitus? At age 56, I have had it for several years but it has gotten more and more noticeable lately. Is there anything I can do?

Lee has led the club for more than 20 years and he’s recruited about 200 people into the organization. “There’s a secret to recruiting for Civitans and I’m one of the few people that knows it,” he said. “The secret is a-s-k. You just have to ask people to join.”
