Seniors saddened by center’s demolition

Mt. Olive Seniors by Dixie Kuykendall

The North Jefferson News

Mt. Olive seniors only had to look out the windows of the new senior center to watch the demolition of the old community center last week.

There were memories, sentimental attachments and stories woven in the fabric of the old building as it was reduced to rubble before our eyes. Many said it hurt to watch the demolition, but like a bad car wreck, you just couldn’t look away. Many of our seniors at the center started school in the first grade in the old building that has been a major part of history in Mt. Olive for many years.

I heard someone say, “If only these walls could speak.” I suppose if they could talk they might say something like “Carry on!”

Our pot luck was, as always, a great success. Thanks to all who really go the extra mile to make this event special.

Speaking of special, we congratulate our center’s newlyweds – Wanda Phillips and Charles Rogers — who were married last month in Gatlinburg. We wish for them the very best.

Have you taken time to look at the color change of the trees? How absolutely beautiful. You don’t have to travel to see fall colors, just look in your own back yard. The holiday season is upon us and soon we will have to go into overdrive.

In the meantime, take time for you. Take time to work, for it is the price of success; take time to think, for it is the source of power; take time to play, for it is the secret of perpetual youth; take time to read, for it is the fountain of wisdom; take time to be friendly, for it is the road to happiness; take time to love and be loved, for it is the privilege of the Gods; take time to share, for life is too short to be selfish; and take time to laugh, for laughter is the music of the soul.

    Dear Savvy Senior
What can you tell me the about the constant ear ringing syndrome known as tinnitus? At age 56, I have had it for several years but it has gotten more and more noticeable lately. Is there anything I can do?
