No matter what party you favor, make sure you vote on Tuesday

I was excited to be the guest speaker for the Kimberly Seniors this past week.

We discussed issues affecting seniors today, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them. Also, the ladies at the Kimberly center are busy making beautiful items to sell at their holiday arts and craft show. Don’t miss it!

I came away with a beautiful Christmas tree made with safety pins and beads and I just love it. Also, don’t forget the arts and crafts and quilt show at the Mt. Olive Senior Center Nov. 14-15. Come do some Christmas shopping with us.

I will be spending this week in Montgomery in session with the Alabama Silver Haired Legislature. We will be discussing issues concerning senior citizens and submitting resolutions to the Governor and the State Legislature. I certainly hope that their next session will be more productive than their last.

I have never been a very political person. I can remember my daddy saying, “Vote a straight Democrat ticket.” Senior citizens of today grew up in a time when it was the normal thing to do — get out and vote because we cared about our country.

In the last presidential election, 79 percent of those 65 and older cast ballots, more than of all other age groups. Even though I was born a Democrat, I have always tended to vote for the person rather than the party.

It can be daunting to filter what really matters on Election Day. Alabama families are struggling with so many issues — a depressed housing market, high gas prices, health care and drug costs and increasing prices of groceries.

Never has the time for doing your own research and getting involved been so important.

Get a sample ballot, which can be obtained from many sites online or check with the library. Study it. Find out how the candidates stand on issues that are important to you. Know the amendments on the ballot and how you want to vote.

Whether your candidate wins or loses, you can say that you made an informed decision and cast your vote.

    Dear Savvy Senior
What can you tell me the about the constant ear ringing syndrome known as tinnitus? At age 56, I have had it for several years but it has gotten more and more noticeable lately. Is there anything I can do?
