Mt. Olive Seniors by Dixie Kuykendall
The North Jefferson News
I am one of the biggest Christmas fanatics that I know — I love Christmas.
I deck every hall and every nook and cranny in our house. I love all Christmas music (except “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer”). I Christmas shop year round.
But, don’t you think that commercial Christmas has taken a life of its own? Come on! Christmas before you finish carving the pumpkin?
It seems as though every year it gets here a little earlier. While looking at Halloween costumes with my grandchildren on one isle in Wal-Mart, there was Christmas music and Santa items on the next isle. Since Wal-Mart and I have a co-dependent relationship, I can look past their shortcomings. But, it is everywhere.
The struggling economy might have something to do with this marketing madness as retailers are anticipating a soft Christmas spending season. They hope to cash in earlier, I suppose.
However, I also like Halloween and pumpkins and trick or treat and I also love Thanksgiving and fall leaves and turkey and dressing.
Let’s not take our cue from the mad retailers. While every day is a day of Thanksgiving, our annual observance of Thanksgiving Day is a special reminder to us of the manifold blessing of God.
Slow down, count your blessings, buy trick-or-treat candy and enjoy the little goblins that come to your door. Then, get out the good china and enjoy family around a bountiful table while you give thanks. After the dishes are put away and sandwiches are made from left over turkey, relax. Then, start pulling out your Christmas decorations and enjoy. Let’s slow down and enjoy life!
Community center happenings
October has been a busy month at the Mt. Olive Community Center.
More than 100 friends attended a reception at the center honoring Betty Kimbrell. Betty was the recipient of a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. She is one of our own and we are so proud of her.
We also enjoyed speakers from UAB, South Care Hospice and Life Care Hospice. We had our hearing checked, played bingo, painted and even found time to go to the Summit on a little shopping expedition.
On Oct. 30, we plan to have a Happy Halloween pot luck dinner. We would love to invite you to be part of the fun. If you are a senior in the Mt. Olive area, come join us.
If you have news or want more information about the center, give me a call at 631-0049 or e-mail me at dixiek@bellsouth.net.

Dear Savvy Senior
What can you tell me the about the constant ear ringing syndrome known as tinnitus? At age 56, I have had it for several years but it has gotten more and more noticeable lately. Is there anything I can do?

Gardendale native Robert E. Lee is revered as “The General of Recruiting” as the president of the Gardendale Civitan Club.
Lee has led the club for more than 20 years and he’s recruited about 200 people into the organization. “There’s a secret to recruiting for Civitans and I’m one of the few people that knows it,” he said. “The secret is a-s-k.
