On April 24, the Gardendale Civic Center will welcome our annual health fair.
Many of our local businesses with senior adult interests will have booths with lots of information. There will be free testing and lots of door prizes. This day is strictly for adults 55 years old and up.
Seniors in our area are invited to spend the morning with us at the civic center exhibition hall from 9 a.m. to noon. Several senior centers will be attending.
Our aim is to educate our senior population so they will be healthier, more alert, mentally fit and safer in their golden years. Our fair this year is sponsored by United Health Care and Jefferson County’s Youth in Aging program. Youth in Aging will have cholesterol, glucose, vision and hearing screenings. There will be other tests provided by other medical facilities.
Keep on dancing
If you like good country dance music and are at least 55, we invite you to come to our Tuesday evening dance. Jerry Bosworth’s Country Pickers play from 6 to 9 p.m. We bring finger foods to enjoy during the break. They play a good variety of music — two-step, waltz and line dance among other types. Come and visit and you will probably want to join our dance club.
Arts, crafts and learning
We have had a wonderful time playing in ceramic clay, making crosses for Easter and windchimes. Patty Crocker with Oasis Hospice has been teaching a class on Fridays.
A new program we have added recently is an Introductory Spanish class, taught by Dean Borden. Our students are having a great time learning a new language. They try to impress us with their new words. Learning anything new helps to keep our old minds sharp.
Last month, June Adams with Affinity Hospice talked to our group about preventing falls. She had some very good advice for us. In a nutshell, we must slow down, don’t take chances, get rid of everything that could trip us up and install handrails. We don’t like to admit we are getting old, but if we want to grow older, we must be extra careful.
The Jefferson County Office of Senior Citizens Services, in conjunction with the State Farmers’ Market Authority, will be distributing free coupons valued at $30 for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program. It is now open in our centers only to active members. Sign up for a membership this week. All others will be able to participate in this program from May through July. (See list of coupon pick-up locations below.)
The Gardendale Senior Center is a beehive of happy activity. If you are sitting at home watching television, staring out the window or at four walls, come down and join us. We enjoy a hot meal every day, and have activities for everyone.
We have a friendly group of people who will welcome you with open arms. We hope to see you soon.

Civitan’s ‘General’ wins major recognition
Gardendale native Robert E. Lee is revered as “The General of Recruiting” as the president of the Gardendale Civitan Club.
Lee has led the club for more than 20 years and he’s recruited about 200 people into the organization. “There’s a secret to recruiting for Civitans and I’m one of the few people that knows it,” he said. “The secret is a-s-k. You just have to ask people to join.” - Area seniors welcome in Fultondale We are excited about all of the things happening at the Fultondale Senior Center. We’d love to invite all seniors over the age of 60 to join us.

My niece Maria and I went out for a girls day several Saturdays ago and ran into a delightful lady, Erin Sullivan.
Mrs. Sullivan grew up in Morris and has many friends in the Morris and Gardendale communities. -
