Dog days of summer filled with fun

Gardendale Senior News by Peggy Hoback Clark

The North Jefferson News

We are still missing Mack’s column, but we will continue to inform the community of the happenings at the center.

Our aim is to exercise our bodies, brains and spirits. Many of the pleasant activities we enjoy do just that. The hot, balanced meals help keep our bodies healthy, exercising our brains and our bodies keeps us alert and the stimulation we enjoy from socializing keeps us happy.

We love entertainment and some of the upcoming activities are listed below.

• July 18: 6 to 8 p.m. — Showstoppers Productions presents: 4harmony Barbershop Quartet at the Senior Center

• July 25: 9:30 a.m. — J. D. Weeks will present a slide show of Historical Birmingham

• July 25: 11:30 a.m. — Golden Eagles Trip to Alabama Museum of Health Science

Every Tuesday morning, one of four bands entertains our group. Seniors in this area are welcome to come and listen to the music, dance a few steps and get to know the members of our center.

Every Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m., The Country Pickers, led by Jerry Bosworth, hold a senior dance at the center. Line dancing fills the entire floor at times. There is no charge for the dance, but we encourage our dancers to bring finger foods to consume at break time.

Every Thursday evening, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Bo Chambers holds his pickin’ and grinnin’ sessions. If you are 55 and older, play an instrument, or are learning to play one, come and join the fun.

Every Wednesday morning, we have an upper body cardiovascular exercise class from 9 to 10 a.m.

Every Monday, we play bingo with Chuck, and Thursday, bingo with Bud.

On Fridays, we enjoy a variety of pastimes — Skip-Bo, dominoes, Wii, bingo with a visiting speaker and Scrabble fill the hours with laughter and fun.

Chef Bud is working on another elegant candlelight spaghetti supper. Watch for the date in this column.

On Aug. 2, we will have our annual luau with Ray Newman, the One Man Band. So, get your grass skirts and your straw hats out.

On Aug. 30, Kevin Atkins, son of Charlie Atkins, and Glenn Tolbert will be bringing us a blast from the past bluegrass. More info on that forthcoming.

If you haven’t visited the senior center, yet, come on in and enjoy a lunch with us, get to know us and enjoy the sweet fellowship we share. I personally am looking for YOU!

Questions about our center can be answered at 632-7240.
