Kimberly center director invites residents to take part in activities
Kimberly Seniors by Jody Newman
The North Jefferson News
Wow, what a ride this past two weeks has been.
First, we began with a yard sale that lasted from June 19-21 and it was a huge success. We hope to purchase computers for the center as a result of that yard sale. Thanks to all of our workers and to those of you who attended the sale. It was a lot of work, but also a lot of fun.
On June 19, we opened our doors for the first time with a pot luck supper. Our Kimberly seniors provided some really delicious food, Dickie Nail and his group provided great music and Valerie Childers entertained us with her clogging. Sixty-four seniors showed up for our first event and everyone had a great time.
On June 23, we opened our doors to begin our activities. Larry Bridges of Wal-Mart taught our seniors to play Wii and it really went over big. Seniors are getting great exercise bowling and playing other games every day.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Kimberly Mayor Sammie Maze thanked everyone for their participation in bringing our Senior Center to a reality. County Commission President Bettye Fines Collins, and William Voigt, Executive Director of the Office of Senior Citizen Services, then cut the ribbon making the senior center official. Again, we had more than 60 people to share in the excitement of our ribbon-cutting event.
Now it’s time for us to start getting to know each other and having fun. Those who have been there this past week have a wonderful friendship growing and, in time, I know we will feel like family.
We invite you to join us. While our daily group is still small, it would be a good time to get to know each of us on a one-on-one basis.
The food service began this week, and we hope that you will stop by and get your form filled out so you can begin to enjoy the nutritious meals that the center will be serving.
If you have any questions about the center or what’s taking place there, call me at 647-9154 or 746-2292. I look forward to introducing you to the new Kimberly Senior Center and the nice people who are making it a huge success.
