Gardendale mayor to address seniors

Gardendale Senior News by Mack McConnell

The North Jefferson News

Special notice to all members of ARESA. You are meeting at 10:30 a.m. this morning at Shoney’s in Gardendale (located at the corner of Fieldstown and Mt. Olive Road) for a Dutch treat breakfast, brunch or lunch, whichever you choose.

Matt Kinder, attorney for the Legal Services of Alabama, will be the speaker. He will be discussing legal services which are available to senior adults and others in our area. Everyone who receives a retirement check from the Retirement System of Alabama and their spouses are invited and encouraged to attend this event. Hurry on over to Shoney’s, even if you are a little late getting there.

Also today, Regional Harris will be making a presentation of Planned Eldercare. This will be at 10 a.m. at the senior center.

On Friday Hospice of Alabama will conduct a bingo game at 9:30 a.m. and will present a program.

Our seniors, as well as all others in our community, should plan to attend the Magnolia Festival on Saturday. We want to give support to all of the effort that goes into getting this annual event together for us to enjoy.

Even if you cannot make any other program, please put Wednesday, April 16, at 10 a.m. on your special attendance calendar. Mayor Clemons will be giving his State of the City Address right here at the senior center. We want you, and I mean all Gardendale residents, to jam pack our center.

Jeff McAnnally will be the speaker for The Low Vision Club which will be meeting here at the center at 10 a.m. on April 25. As always, this meeting is open to the public. Vision problems of all sorts will be addressed and questions on this subject will be answered.

Speaking of small good deeds, don’t forget that we are continuing to collect items to send off to those who are serving our country in the military. Just a little effort on our part to pick up an extra item while we are in the store anyway, but when put together with what others bring in, may make a difference in a hero’s life.

I understand that Beverly Hill has been in the hospital. We pray that she will soon be well and back with us.

We can do anything we want if we stick to it long enough. Practice sessions will soon be set up to give everyone skill at the Wii electronic games the center has recently purchased. People who never get to a bowling alley will be able to bowl, and people who could never get out on a golf course will be able to golf. It has a great potential for years to come.

Being with other seniors at the center makes sense. You have a lot in common with each other. You can somewhat forget your aches and pains when you join in whatever activity you desire. Be as active as you can and get ahead of the baby boomers who are coming right behind us.

Life is 10 percent what you make it and 90 percent how you take it. Smiling is a great exercise. Try it.

Until next week, God bless.
