American Legion gives $16,000 in scholarships

By Melanie Patterson

The North Jefferson News

The Hawkins B. Carter American Legion Post No. 255 in Fultondale is helping a crop of north Jefferson County residents further their educations.

On Aug. 7, the post awarded 16 scholarships worth $1,000 each to area students.

Post Commander Don Vaughn said the American Legion wants to help students because the military veterans believe in furthering the lives of America’s future.

Fultondale City Councilman Darrell Hubbert was at the meeting representing the city. Hubbert was standing in for Fultondale Mayor Jim Lowery, who could not attend the meeting.

Vaughn said that 16 students applied for the scholarships, and all 16 were awarded funds.

He said he sent invitations to all high schools in north Jefferson County, but only students from Gardendale, Mortimer Jordan and Fultondale applied.

Those who received awards from the post include:

• Zachery Alford, Gardendale High School, attending the University of Alabama (UA)

• Ali Jordan Anderson, Mortimer Jordan, attending UA

• Jeremy Corner, Gardendale, attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB)

• Justin Crawford, Gardendale, attending Auburn University (AU)

• Haley Dove, a previous scholarship recipient, attending Jacksonville State University

• Mark Alan Haygood, a previous scholarship recipient, attending Virginia Tech

• Jessica Higgins, Gardendale, attending Wallace State Community College (WSCC)

• Amber Nicole Key, Fultondale, attending WSCC

• Kaci R. Larson, previous scholarship recipient, attending AU

• Brian A. Lindsay, Gardendale, attending the University of West Alabama

• Lindsey Denise Mann, previous scholarship recipient, attending UAB

• Shelbie Myrex, Gardendale, attending UAB

• William Ethan Powers, Gardendale, attending UAB

• Courtney Sanford, Mortimer Jordan, attending UA
