ChristWay Church awards first music scholarship

Gardendale’s ChristWay Church has awarded the first in a series of music scholarships.

Andrew Crenshaw of Gardendale, the son of Daniel and Evelyn Crenshaw, began an internship at ChristWay on June 1. It ends in May 2010.

The ChristWay Musicians Excellence Scholarship (CMES) was originally available to high-school juniors and seniors to intern with ChristWay for one or two years.

Michael Lowe, CMES coordinator, said that the scholarship is now being opened to college students.

Those who are selected to serve one year receive a $2,000 scholarship to their school of choice. Students who serve two years receive a $4,000 scholarship.

Crenshaw, a junior at Gardendale High School, will intern for two years.

He plays alto saxophone, sitting in the first chair in his section in the Gardendale High School band.

Crenshaw was named to the District Honor Band for four years, the All County Band for two years, the UAB Honor Band for two years and the Alabama All State Band one year.

After high school, Crenshaw plans to pursue a music/art degree at an Alabama university.

Three people applied for the first round of scholarships, according to Lowe. He said the church has plans for three additional recipients this year.

“We will hold a second round of auditions during the summer,” said Lowe.
