Church of the Week: Skyline Church

By Melanie Patterson

The North Jefferson News

As part of a continuing series, we will feature a Q&A with a local pastor. This week features Pastor Mika Marcum of Skyline Church in Warrior.

Q. How long have you served as a pastor?

A. Since the church was planted in March of 2005.

Q.Tell me about your family.

I have my beautiful wife Kandy with whom I've shared 26 wonderful years. I have three children. My oldest daughter Kourtny Teer is married to Brandon Teer and they have two children, Alli Faith Teer, 2, and a daughter born on Dec. 20, Ashton Hope Teer. My daughter Kassidy Wingo is married to Blake Wingo. They have two children, Kyla Eve Wingo, 2, and Brey Wingo, 8 months. My son Mika Lee Marcum II is 19 and a college student.

Q. What is the most important thing you want to impart to your congregation?

A. I would say that sharing as well as living the message that every moment of every day we should have the “likeness of Christ.” This is the most important thing in our walk with God. A paraphrased version would be expressed like this, “we should act like God!” Believers in Christ should be a true embodiment of Christ. This is what the Bible means when it says in the New Testament (Matthew 5:13-14): “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.” We must be that light to others because it’s about Him, not about us.

Q. Where do you see the U.S. headed on a spiritual level? What are the implications?

A. Part of me sees the spiritual level of the U.S. on a downhill slide. I think the implications would be that the tricks and schemes that we have embraced as a country is blatantly against the commands of the Lord and the evidence of that is all around us. I believe the moral fiber that was established in our early days as a nation has been stripped away by this deceit of the enemy. However, I can also see a great awakening that’s beginning to be stirred up among the Body of Christ. I think that God is doing a great work in our country through His people! I am so thankful to live in the U.S.

Q. Describe the atmosphere at Skyline.

A. It's an exciting atmosphere and we are so thankful to God because “Great things He has done!” Our church is still very new and young with lots of young families in it. However, the Lord has provided so many blessings and miracles in our midst. I feel like we see miracles in the lives of our church body continuously with people truly converted and changed!

Q. As a pastor, where do you go for encouragement?

A. Sharing my heart with my wife and family and most of all spending time in prayer and studying the Word of God. These are encouraging for me.

Q. What do you do to relax?

A. What's that? I do relax on occasions but I pretty much have two speeds: On and Off. No joke, I do like to sit on the family couch sometimes and take in a serious show like “Wheel of Fortune,” “Deal or No Deal” or “Cops” (I usually pray for the folks on “Cops” and they're usually reruns)!
