Make Halloween fun this year

Make Halloween fun this year

AN NJN EDITORIAL — Today is Halloween, and in the true spirit of this national holiday, it’s only right that we discuss the importance of staying young in the mind and having a good time.

It would be really easy to decide that you are too old to dress up for this occasion, but at what expense?

The neighborhood kids need you. The fall festivals and trunk-or-treats are calling out to you. Answer the call, dress up. Get into your character. Let your hair hang out and your inner child shine through.

If you have children, this is the perfect time to encourage them to be whatever they want to be when they grow up. Many kids will be doctors or dentists or teachers for Halloween. My daughters will be Super Girl and Abbey Cadabby from Sesame Street... I’ll wait until next year to instill the importance of a high paying job as their lifetime goal. This year they get to be whatever they want to be.

It is also vitally important that you allow your children to eat whatever amount and whatever type of candy that they choose for this special night. That’s right parents, for just one night out of the year, let them eat all of the chocolate, gummies and sugar they can fit into their little bellies. If they get sick in the middle of the night, then you can also turn it into a learning experience for future references about self control and the importance of eating right. But push all of that to the back of your minds for this one evening.

Now adults, if you are brave enough to let yourself dress up in character, then use your imagination and let it run wild. This will be the first year that everyone in our office at The North Jefferson News is dressing up in a character and we decided to go a little out of the box on it.

If we can find beards for everyone, then we will each be dressed as a character from Duck Dynasty. That’s right, even the female employees will be dawning long, scruffy beards and camo for this happy, happy, happy occasion. But fear not, we will still be working feverishly to bring you all of the local news that you are used to receiving; we will just be doing it with a little extra flair today.

So for this one day out of the entire year, why not let yourself have a sense of humor and dress up in a costume? Even if you just go to the store and buy a pre-made outfit, just do it. Do it for the kids around you. Do it for yourself, because if you can’t laugh at yourself, then you might as well get use to people laughing at you.

We hope you each have a safe and happy Halloween and please be careful on the streets tonight. You don’t want to run over any little ghoulish trick-or-treaters.

I was born the daughter of a fisherman. My dad was the pastor of a local church and the manager at various Jefferson County Waste Water Treatment plants, but anyone who knows him, knows he is a fisherman at heart.

  • Danielle Cater: Making memories not that hard

Do you spoil your kids? Do you spend enough on them? What really matters when it comes to the well-being of your children? These questions are real doozies and I think the answers vary according to the family.

The caps and gowns are ordered, the invitations have been mailed. Checks are being written all across the country, it must be graduation time.

  • Danielle Cater: Longevity in marriage still possible

I have officially seen it with my own eyes. I have witnessed it with my own life. Yes, I have seen a couple who has been married 60 years and still love each other. Even more than that, they still respect each other and still genuinely love to be around each other.

  • Danielle Cater: ‘Girl in the front’ loves her job

I’m 33 years old. Yes, I just admitted that. The reason I throw this fact out there so freely is that I have now, officially, been working for the North Jefferson News for over 10 years. That’s right, almost 1/3 of my life has been spent behind this desk. (And yes, I’ve had the same desk all 10 years.)

The media is all abuzz this week over the story of a woman who apparently gave birth to seven babies in the last 10 years without anyone’s knowledge, then killed her babies and stored them in boxes in her garage.

  • Danielle Cater: Be strong in moments of weakness

A sad scene took place on Sunday at a church in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The founding pastor of Calvary Chapel stepped down from his position of head pastor due to “moral failing which disqualifies him from continuing his leadership role at the church.” This church is home to over 20,000 members who worship together in 10 locations across Florida.

You’re never too old to learn something new. I’m of the opinion that you can, indeed, teach an old dog new tricks.
So as an old dog, I’ve been trying to pick up a new trick.
