Take time away with friends

Take time away with friends

AN NJN EDITORIAL — There’s a song that was popular while I was in high school that said, “I want to get away; I want to fly away.” I think we all feel this way at some point in time.

So what do you do when you want to fly away? I say that’s the perfect opportunity to run to the beach.

Just last week I was talking with one of my girlfriends and we were discussing all of the decisions and issues facing us at the time, and we decided it was high time for a little girl time. So the very next weekend we packed up our stuff, stole another girlfriend to tag along and the three of us headed south to the beach — no men, no kids, no worries, just friends and fun.

Men often say that they can’t comprehend why women do things like this, but they get plenty of man time while hunting or fishing or racing. Women usually only have a shopping option, but that often times includes the kids, or at least when you are there you are usually shopping for the hubby or children. But a girl’s beach trip is the perfect answer to let go of every care for a few days and do nothing more than soak up the sand and sun.

Of course, real women love to eat, so we started the trip with some good food options, Then it was off to the beach, where we spent all morning and all day just lounging around and talking about everything under the sun (and I do mean everything).

Each one of us needs those people in our lives who we don’t have to hold anything back from. We all need someone we can be completely transparent with and yet they will still love us for who we are. It is also important to let people be this way with you. You’ll never have close, personal friends if you judge them at every corner or if you betray their trust. But if you are a friend, then you will have friends. If you show yourself as unjudging, fun, trustworthy and friendly, then you will have friends.

It was quite clear on this little two-day trip that we weren’t the crazy bunch of women we were when we were younger. The second night there we were all piled up in a bed watching television in our pajamas by 8 p.m. It sounds like a horrible time from the outside, but in reality, there is probably nothing we all needed more than some boring television time while laughing with our girlfriends. Sometimes just getting away can make your life problems seem more approachable.

So the next time you start to feel a little overwhelmed by life, look it dead in the eyes and declare that it is time for a weekend getaway. Even if your getaway is only to the local park and then to the ice cream shop, it’s always nice to take a step away from your day to day life and change it up a little. And who has ever regretted a little down time with friends?

It’s the perfect solution to whatever issues you’re facing.
