AN NJN EDITORIAL —
The media is all abuzz this week over the story of a woman who apparently gave birth to seven babies in the last 10 years without anyone’s knowledge, then killed her babies and stored them in boxes in her garage.
According to her story, she gave birth to at least six healthy babies and one stillborn in that 10-year period.
After giving birth, she would either strangle or suffocate the babies immediately after they were born. She wrapped each one in either a towel or a shirt, placed inside of a plastic bag, and each was contained in a separate cardboard box.
Sounds gruesome, sounds unthinkable. I think we can all agree that this woman needs to be punished to the fullest extent of the law. I can’t imagine being a momma who would take the life of her own babies.
I can’t even fathom what may have gone through her mind when she held her precious newborn baby and strangled that child to death or suffocated them with a plastic bag. How numb she must have been when she wrapped them in a shirt, then in a plastic bag, and laid that precious, dead child in a cardboard box and proceeded to place that box in her garage.
I think we can also all agree that something has to be wrong with a woman who would do such a thing.
But let’s take a walk on the other side of this line. Tell me why, in America, it is a heinous crime to murder your child only minutes after they are born, but it is perfectly legal to murder you child moments before they are born. We have such a double standard in this country in the fact that this woman murdering her child mere seconds after birth is a crime, but if she had done it moments earlier, we would have called it an abortion and it would have been completely socially acceptable.
It is perfectly legal for a mom to “dispose of” her unborn child because we refer to that child as a fetus. We shrug it off as a mistake or an unwanted occurrence, and we make one trip to the doctor and have our babies murdered.
We take a pill the morning after intercourse and tell ourselves that we’ve done nothing wrong. Yet we are killing our youth. We are just killing them a few months earlier than this woman killed her children.
I understand that there are extreme circumstances, but I’ve had several friends who have had abortions and these cases have never been extreme; they have been regrettable, but not extreme. Just because you get pregnant outside of marriage, is no reason to try to remedy the pregnancy by ending it.
When women have abortions, they don’t just get over it. It haunts their minds, their bodies and their families for the rest of their lives.
Please don’t think I am looking down a judgemental nose at anyone. There was a time in my life that I felt very differently about this because someone I am close to was going through it. But when the emotions and the dust settles, you’ll never regret having your baby. You can give them to others for adoption or raise them yourself, but ending your child’s life really isn’t the best option.
I believe this mom needs to be punished. The punishment that she deserves can’t legally be done to her, but if you are a parent, then this story had to strike close to your heart. We need to keep our hearts soft to this issue. We need to remember that a life is already a life whether that child has taken their first breath or not. I know this isn’t a popular opinion, but it is this girl’s, this mom’s and this daughter’s opinion.
