COMMENTARY —
This past weekend I got the opportunity to watch one of our local plays be performed at the new Gardendale High School auditorium and it was so nicely done.
The show was “42nd Street,” and the performance was great. The lighting and sound was well done and the acting and singing were outstanding.
I personally love any type of acting or drama, so this was right up my alley. We went into the auditorium not knowing what to expect. We had never heard of the play before and honestly, I couldn’t tell you if it was a comedy, drama or romance. It turned out to be a musical, about a musical.
Normally this would have made me jump up and run out since singing isn’t really what I like in a play, but these actors and actresses had beautiful voices that matched their acting abilities perfectly.
The feel was perfect for a summer night. I noticed that many couples made a whole date night out of it by going to dinner and then the play.
The best part of it all is that it was put together by the Gardendale Arts Council. We are blessed to live in communities that actually care enough to put on events that draw family-fun activities to our neighborhoods.
If you have ever complained about not having anything to do in this community, then you should be the very one who supports these type of events. The council works extremely hard to get the right people in the right positions to make these plays turn out as well as they do, and I will do my part to help support these local events. Not to mention the fact that it is so much fun to get to see all of the familiar faces when getting out in this town.
Community is so important, not only to individuals but to families also. The old saying is that it takes a village to raise a child. If that is the case, then open your eyes to your village, because the people you pass in the store or sit by at a play are the very ones who will be helping, in some part, to pour into your own family.
Take the time to get involved in your community, or don’t complain when things aren’t going the way they should in it. Stand up and be a part.
Enjoy the extra little things that are offered by your town — they work hard to bring them to you.
