COMMENTARY — We’ve all seen it. Most of us have talked about it. People have posted on Facebook, tweeted about it and had multiple water cooler conversations about it, and yet it seems to have happened again.
Yes, I’m talking about the self-destruction of Miley Cyrus.
I had the displeasure of watching her new music video “Wrecking Ball,” which is nothing more than Cyrus in her underwear (and much less than that at times) riding a wrecking ball and seductively licking a sledgehammer.
Folks, I can’t make this stuff up.
As if “twerking” all over a married man while doing unmentionable things to a sports foam finger at the VMA Awards earlier in the month weren’t enough, this girl has taken it a little further with this new video.
If you have been living under a rock and don’t know who we are talking about here, Miley Cyrus is also known as Hannah Montana to youth-age viewers. She is the daughter of well-known country music singer Billy Ray Cyrus.
I just happen to be a momma of four little girls who are absolutely in love with the music of Hannah Montana. She sang songs that were wholesome and you could dance and sing to them without worrying about any curse words or vulgar lyrics. Cyrus went from a wholesome household name to the punchline of many jokes in just a few months.
I’ve heard people say that she is just trying to break out of her youthful singing and acting career into a more adult role. Well let me tell you something, Cyrus, if you want to be treated like an adult, then it’s probably a good idea to ACT like an adult.
The last two appearances that I’ve seen of her involved nothing more than hormone-raged, teenage drama, stupidness that needs to be brought under control. The way she presents herself is not only cheap and disgusting, it’s degrading and pathetic — and that’s putting it mildly.
She had an opportunity to be a role model to little girls who so desperately need good, wholesome people in Hollywood to look up to. Now there is no way that I would allow my daughters to go to one of her concerts or to purchase one of her new albums.
Her little plan is working in her favor though, as her newest music video set records with the most views on Vevo in a 24-hour period following its debut on Monday. If this whole thing is one big publicity stunt, then it is surely working. People are talking about her everywhere I go. But no one is talking about it in a good light.
Some are speaking about how sad it is to see a girl with so much potential sell herself like a cheap backroom call girl. And others are talking about how her family must feel about it. Can you imagine helping your daughter get so far in life, encouraging her singing career and helping her with lines for her acting debut, only to see it come to fruition in the form of her riding a wrecking ball in the nude and licking a hammer for all of the world to see. The shame for them must be so unbearable. It’s hard enough watching someone else’s daughter do that to herself, I can’t imagine being her parents as she goes through this stage in her life.
It is so sad that our society allows this to happen, and yet here I sit as guilty as any. I watched the video. (I will never watch it again, thank God, but I did watch it to see what all the hype was about.) It’s filth, pond scum, disgusting and I pray to God that my daughters never look up to a woman like that as a role model in their lives. When I see Miley Cyrus, I don’t know if I should feel sad for her, or just go punch her in the throat. I know, I know, that’s violent and definitely not the right answer, but if I’m being honest about what my head wants to do, that’s going be my go-to move in this situation.
It’s so sad to see someone who has the opportunity to do great things, throw it all away to make a name for themselves. I hope she realizes where this road leads and takes a turn to a much better life than the one she’s headed for at the moment. But between now and then, I plan to shield my daughters from her displays of disrespect and hopefully we can find a better person for them to aspire to be like.
Perhaps the youth of America will see the reaction that Cyrus is getting for her grotesque actions and will understand the importance of conducting themselves in a respectful manner. I’m no expert on self-respect, but I’m pretty sure if you ever see me acting like that, you should check me into a mental hospital because I’ve lost it. It would be better for everyone involved. That’s how I feel about Cyrus; it would be better for her and everyone around her for her to step out of the spotlight and get her life back in order.
I hope things turn around soon for Cyrus and her singing career. I was a fan of her music before she went crazy and I’m hoping that our family can once again dance and sing to her music one day. But in the spirit of teaching our children how to respect themselves and others, we won’t be supporting this train wreck until it gets back on track.
