NORTH JEFFERSON — Ruth Fleming Dawson 82, left this temporary home on December 15, 2013.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John Luther and Velma C. Fleming, her husband, James L. Dawson, Jr., sister, Margie Fleming Walker and brothers, Hershel, Virgil, Jay, Basil and Coy Fleming.

She is survived by her children, Jack (Sherri) Dawson, Charlotte Holbrook Baker, and Teresa (Kerry) Sparks; grandchildren, Shannon (Joe) Hutchings, Lori (Gary) Koller, Stephanie Sparks, Billy (Megan) Holbrook, Lindsey (Wes) Hicks and Anna Brooke Sparks; great grandchildren, Banks, Luke and Marli Hutchings, Paige, Aubrey and Evan Koller, and Gabe and Finlee Kate Holbrook. She was known affectionately as “Miss Ruth” to generations of children at Hilldale Baptist Church and to the families whose lives she touched through her home daycare.

Diagnosed with Bilateral Congenital Toxoplasmosis, Mrs. Dawson understood all too well the challenges facing those with limited sight. She was the founding president of The Liz Moore Low Vision Support Group and at the time of her death was a member of The Insight Low Vision Support Group. Her vision impairment never dampened her joy in life, love of adventure and desire to help others. Hers was a life well lived that continues on earth through the differences she made in the lives of friends and family members who were blessed to know her.

Her family is thankful for the care and support provided by staff and friends at Covenant Place of Gardendale, and are most grateful for the tender care given her by Hope Hospice, especially Vickie, Brenda and J.J.

The family will receive guests on Monday, December 16, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. and on December 17 from 1 to 2 p.m. The funeral service will be Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at 2 p.m. at The New Gardendale Funeral Home, with interment following at Elmwood Cemetery. Dr. Ron Pate and Dr. Donny Holley officiating.

The New Gardendale Funeral Home directing.
