Mountain Brook scored twice in the seventh inning on an error and a Parker Israel ground-out to beat Gardendale 7-5 in Thursday afternoon baseball.

The Rockets and Spartans had battled back and forth and stayed even most of the game. Mountain Brook scored four runs in the first as Gardendale starter Conner McCain was touched for two hits and three walks, and finished off by a Cody Jones bases-loaded triple that cleared the sacks.

Gardendale responded in kind in the second, when Landon Kelley -- the ninth hitter in the order -- hit a bases-loaded double, then scored on a hit by Chase Handley.

The Spartans took the lead back when Jones scored Lee McNorton on a sacrifice fly in the fifth, but the Rockets tied the game again on Daniel Swann's RBI single in the bottom of the inning.

Gardendale threatened in the bottom of the sixth when Kelley hit a lead-off double, but he was thrown out when Bobby Williams hit into a fielder's choice, then Williams was caught stealing trying to advance to second.

In softball, top-ranked Mortimer Jordan blanked Hayden 10-0 in six innings Thursday. Haylie McCleney hit a solo home run, and Danae Hays had three runs batted in. Pitcher Blair Johnson notched her seventh win, striking out nine while allowing two hits and no walks.
