GARDENDALE — Chris Walton pitched a three-hit shutout in the first game, as Gardendale swept Pleasant Grove 3-0 and 11-1 in a Thursday baseball doubleheader.
Walton struck out five and gave up just one walk, as he leveled his record at 1-1.
Jake Freeman hit a two-run single in the bottom of the first, for what turned out to be the deciding runs of the game for the Rockets.
Joe Hudson allowed four hits in six innings, and struck out five as he took the loss for the Spartans.
Caleb Webb hit a double for Pleasant Grove, the only extra-base hit of the game.
In the nightcap, which ended in the fifth inning on the mercy rule, Bryce Jay was 4-for-4 with three RBIs for Gardendale (5-2). Chris Martin drove in two runs on a pair of singles and a sacrifice, and Carter Burns was 2-for-3 with a double.
Starter Dalton Moore (2-0) gave up four hits while striking out three. Chris Blakey pitched one inning of relief.
Brandon Boyles drove in the only run of the game for the Spartans.
The Rockets are off until Monday, when they open Jefferson County Tournament play at Center Point.
