FULTONDALE —
Oak Mountain was the best of a field of 20 teams, going undefeated in pool matches and the championship group to take the title of the inaugural Charlie Bruce Duals wrestling tournament, held last weekend at Fultondale.
The Eagles bested Pinson Valley, Mortimer Jordan and Hayden in the championship grouping on Saturday. The Indians took second place by defeating the Blue Devils, and Jordan placed third by beating Hayden.
It was the first year of the new duals format, replacing Fultondale’s long-running wrestling tournament that was run in traditional weight-class brackets.
It was also the first time that Bruce was honored by having the event named for him. Bruce was the longtime wrestling coach for Fultondale, leading the team to state championships during his 17-year tenure. He’s now an assistant principal at Vestavia Hills.
Bruce would have been proud of his old team, which placed fifth in the tournament. Fultondale’s only loss came to Oak Mountain in Friday’s pool matches, and they were unbeaten in the consolation group that determined fifth through seventh places. More importantly to current coach Billy Hughes, his team was able to knock off longtime powerhouse Tallassee in pool play — the first time that his Wildcats have ever pulled off the feat.
“Unfortunately, I didn’t get to coach those matches, because I was busy trying to sort through a tiebreaker to determine which teams went where,” Hughes said.
Muscle Shoals placed sixth and McAdory seventh. (Homewood had qualified for the consolation pool, but was forced to withdraw because of illnesses on the team and conflicts with ACT testing.)
Additionally, 21 wrestlers were named to the tournament’s all-star team. These wrestlers went undefeated throughout the tournament, and were on teams that placed in the top seven. They are:
Oak Mountain: Chris Richmond, Lloyd Time, Jared Godfrey, Coleman Reeves
Pinson Valley: Patrick Tenney, Hank Turner, Barrett Crossley
Mortimer Jordan: Cody Skinner, Devon McCombs, Braxton Worthington, Lane Lucas, Trevor Barber
Hayden: Matthew Green, Hunter Flowers, Parker Sims
Fultondale: Gabriel Martinez, Zach Cummings, Austin Durbin
Muscle Shoals: Chandler Sartain
McAdory: Trey Norris, Danzell Little
