IRONDALE — Mortimer Jordan tried to mount a comeback late in the game, but Hueytown's 19-point halftime advantage was simply too much for the Blue Devils to overcome, as the Golden Gophers won a 60-54 decision in the large-school consolation bracket of the Jefferson County Schools Girls Basketball Tournament, played Wednesday at Shades Valley.
The Devils managed only a 3-point basket in the opening period, while the Gophers scored 17. But Sarah Rickles caught fire in the second half, scoring all of her team-high 17 points after intermission, including five treys.
Alysa Amberson scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Haley Alexander had a double-double with 13 rebounds and 10 points, going 6-for-6 at the foul line.
Destiny Winters led all scorers with 17 points for Hueytown, and Dmiyah Foster added 15.
Hueytown takes on Gardendale in the next round at 6 p.m. Thursday, while Jordan plays Pinson Valley at 4:30.
