GARDENDALE —
A record field of 20 teams turned out for the 2012 edition of the Gardendale Wrestling Invitational. But in the end, one team had the number of all the others.
Hewitt-Trussville had five weight-class winners, plus a second-place and three thirds as they rolled to the team championship last Saturday.
The Huskies scored 243.5 points, beating runner-up Oak Mountain by nearly 60 points.
Among local teams, Pinson Valley placed fourth, with Mortimer Jordan just behind. Hayden was eighth, with Gardendale, Center Point and Fultondale finishing back in the pack.
Defending state champion Anthony Scott of Hayden won the title at 195 pounds, defeating Christopher Richmond of Oak Mountain 4-2 in the final match.
Gardendale heavyweight Daniel Adkins also took gold, pinning Pinson’s Barrett Crossley in the final.
