GARDENDALE — Tabernacle Christian's 8-man football team is headed to Dayton, Tenn., to play in the National Association of Christian Athletes national championship this week.
Fresh off winning their second straight Christian Football Association title game on Friday night, the Torches will play at 11 a.m. Wednesday against Fountain Inn Christian School of South Carolina. Then on Friday at 1 p.m., they will play the Carolina Wildcats, a home-school team based out of Pickens, S.C.
The NACA tournament is divided into several divisions. Metro Birmingham teams have had success at this event in the past, with Hope Christian — the Pelham-based home-school that handed the Torches their only loss this year — returning as a defending champion in a larger division, and has won several championships in the past. Evangel Christian out of Alabaster has won NACA titles twice, and the now-defunct Garywood Christian in Hueytown won in 2002.
