HOOVER — Pinson Valley standout running back Nick Gibson got closer to the 2,000-yard rushing mark for the season, but didn’t cross that line — and crossed the goal line only once — as the Indians fell to Briarwood Christian 23-13 in the regular-season finale Friday.
Gibson finished with 118 yards for the night, pushing his season total to 1,935 yards. But he was second to Lions quarterback Walker Lott, who ran for 133 yards threw for 122, with one touchdown.
Briarwood got on the board first with a Jonathan McGehee field goal, but the Indians took the lead early in the second quarter when quarterback Brooks Garrett fired a 28-yard touchdown pass to Trey Underwood.
The Lions’ Ethan Simmons then scored touchdowns on two short runs to close out the first half, giving the hosts a 17-7 lead at halftime.
Lott connected with Andrew Schaper on a 4-yard scoring pass early in the fourth period.
Gibson scored late for Pinson on a 6-yard run.
Briarwood outgained the Indians 379 yards to 332. Pinson dominated the passing game, while the Lions controlled the rushing attack with 258 yards compared to 115.
The Indians (6-4) open the post-season next Friday at home against perennial foe Hartselle, in the NJN Big Game for the first playoff round.
[Edited at 12:33 a.m. to correct that Nick Gibson scored one touchdown, wearing a different jersey — his original #8 jersey was ripped earlier in the game.]
