CORNER — Hueytown scored twice in the fifth inning, giving itself the needed advantage for a 3-1 win at Corner in the fifth-place bracket semifinal of the Jefferson County Schools Baseball Tournament on Friday.
Jackson Tavel's line-drive double in the third scored Robby Harpman, who had reached base on a lead-off error. That plat play tied the game at 1-1.
The Golden Gophers took the lead when Cardon Mellown singled to center field to bring home Brandon Conner. Mellown later scored on a wild pitch.
Lane Wallace held the Yellow Jackets (6-7) to three hits while striking out five, as he went the distance on the mound for Hueytown. Kevin Bryant took the loss for Corner, striking out four and giving up three runs in five hits. He was lifted after Mellown's run-scoring hit in the fifth.
Conner hit three doubles for the Gophers and scored twice.
The Jackets face Gardendale in the seventh-place game to be played Saturday morning at Hueytown.
