JeffCo Baseball Tournament: Pleasant Grove 7, Corner 5

CORNER — Pleasant Grove overcame a four-run deficit, rallying behind a bases-clearing double by Seth Grammer for a 7-5 win at Corner on Wednesday in the last pool-play game of the Jefferson County Schools Baseball Tournament.

The win by the Spartans pushed them into the championship bracket on Friday, when they will host Clay-Chalkville in a semifinal game. Corner hosts Hueytown that day in the fifth-place bracket.

After Pleasant Grove opened the scoring with an RBI single by Jordan Smith in the first, the Yellow Jackets exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second. Three of those runs came when Chris Huff hit into an error in right field that unloaded the bases. Jackson Tavel and Dillon McCaleb also had RBI hits.

But those were all the runs Corner could muster, and the Spartans methodically chipped away at the lead the rest of the way. Grammer's three-run double gave the visitors the lead in the fifth inning, and Pleasant Grove added another run in the sixth on an error — one of six by the Jackets.

Corner had its chances to take the game back in the sixth inning, as they loaded the bases with no outs on a Robby Harpman hit, a ht-batsman for Chase Best and another base hit by Tavel. But after two fly-outs, Harpman tried to steal home and was thrown out. They then went three up, three down in the seventh to end the game.

Tavel was 2-for-3 for the day with the one RBI for the Jackets. Starting pitcher DaQuan Johnson was 2-for-4 and scored a run for Pleasant Grove. He wasn't around on the mound long enough to get the win; middle reliever Caleb Webb was the victorious pitcher with just one hit allowed in three innings. Tristin Davis got the save, working the sixth and seventh innings.

Tavel started for Corner (6-6), but was yanked after recording one out in the third. McCaleb went the rest of the way and was tagged with the loss.
