PINSON — Pinson Valley split its opening-day tri-series at home Monday, winning the first game against Auburn in an 11-8 slugfest, then dropping the nightcap 7-5 to Smiths Station.
In the first game, the Indians got big innings in the third and the fifth to push past the Tigers. Tyler Evans was 2-for-4 with three RBIs — a run-scoring double during a four-run rally in the third, and a two-run ht in the fifth.
Gracen Armstrong hit 2-for-3 and scored three runs, while Brent Stephens was also 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Starting pitcher Bailey Chesser went four innings for the win, striking out four while allowing five hits and five walks.
In the closer, the Indians’ seventh-inning rally attempt came up short, as the Panthers scored three times in the fifth for the game-winning runs.
Scott Falkinburg was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Joshua Hines had a run-scoring single and drove home another run on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice.
Brad Eckmyre went five innings for the loss, giving up three earned runs on seven hits.
Pinson Valley hosts Hueytown in a doubleheader on Wednesday.
