The Gardendale Parks and Recreation Junior Team Tennis program has been recognized by the United States Tennis Association for its ability to retain players from year to year.
The USTA said that the junior program, headed by tennis pro Marie Zassoda, was the state’s most successful program from 2006 onward in getting players to come back year after year.
The USTA measures retention by how many players register for four or five years over a certain period.
USTA Junior Team Tennis is composed of local teams of boys and girls who play in a special mixed format, loosely based on the World Team Tennis pro league founded by Billie Jean King.
