Baseball: Mortimer Jordan 13, Corner 3 (5 innings)

CORNER — Mortimer Jordan got revenge for its only loss of the season thus far, as it steamrolled Corner 13-3 in five innings as the teams opened play in the Jefferson County Schools Baseball Tournament on Monday.

It was Blue Devil senior Orion Recke's day to shine. He hit three doubles in four at-bats, driving in six runs. On the mound, he gave up three hits and three earned runs, striking out six Yellow Jacket batters to earn his third win in as many decisions.

Jordan ran Corner starting pitcher Blake Byrd out of the game quickly. Byrd last only a third of an inning, as he conceded five runs (three earned) on two hits and four walks. Seth Merchant relieved Byrd and threw 3-2/3 innings with six hits allowed. Logan Chappell pitched the last inning.

Ty Miller hit two doubles in four at-bats and scored two runs for the Devils (12-1). Garrett Suchey hit a run-scoring double and scored three times.

Cody Gilbert was 2-for-2 with two RBIs for the Jackets.

Jordan hosts Center Point on Tuesday and then travles to Pinson Valley on Wednesday. Corner hosts Pinson on Tuesday and goes to Gardendale on Wednesday as tournament play continues.
