State softball tournament: Hayden 12, Shelby County 0 (6 innings)

Kirkland, Miller combine for two-hitter

MONTGOMERY — Hayden has advanced to the winner's bracket second round of the AHSAA Class 5A state softball tournament, thanks to a 12-0 beatdown of Shelby County that ended after six innings.

Starting pitcher Caitlin Kirkland and reliever Sharley Miller combined for a two hitter, with Kirkland going four innings and striking out eight batters. Miller fanned two more in her two innings' work.

Lead-off hitter Brooke Meadows had the big game at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a three-run homer in the sixth inning, keying a seven-run rally. She had four RBIs in total.

Catcher Madalyn McMickin was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Kirkland and left fielder Nikki Witt also went 2-for-4, and each drove home a run.

Hayden faces Saraland in a game scheduled for 7 p.m. The Spartans beat Southside-Gadsden 1-0 on a walk-off RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh inning. On the other side of the bracket, Curry defeated Briarwood Christian 11-3, and top-ranked Scottsboro whipped Faith Academy 12-2 in five innings.
